There are no fine-dining restaurants in Casiguran. To experience the local cuisine, try the eateries and carinderia in the market and near the terminal. Prior to going to the resorts, make sure to buy food especially fresh malasigue (blue marlin) at P100/kilo! This is a sure delight. You can ask Kuya Richard to cook meals for you when you get to the resort.

Lingapin mo po kami at punuin ng iyong awa ang aming mga puso upang magkaroon kami ng tibay ng loob at talino, na matutuhan naming magmuni, nang sa gayon ay makilala namin ang aming mga kahinaan at lakas.

Marami po sa amin ang nakapamuhay sa gitna ng katiwalian, kasakiman at karahasan, at naipagwalang bahala namin ang katotohanang ang bansang ito - o alinmang bansa sa daigdig - ay di nabubuhay, sasagana at uunlad kung kami'y hindi magtuturingang magkakapatid na nagsusumikap hindi sa pansariling kapakanan lamang kundi para sa kapakanan nglahat.

Bigyan mo po kami ng lakas ng loob upang kami ay makapagbagong buhay at ng matalikdan namin sa habang panahon ang aming mga kasakiman at katiwalian at iba pang masasamang asal.

Ipahintulot Mo pong makilala namin ang aming mga sarili at malaman namin kung ano ang tungkuling dapat naming gampanan, imulat Mo po kami, buksan mo ang aming mga puso at isipan sa mga bagay na kailanang naming gawin, at sa mga bagay na maari naming magawa upang ang masagana at marilag na lupaing ito ay magsilbing aliw at katuwaan sa lahat ng kanyang mamamayan.

Kami na po ang nagtakda sa aming sarili ng mabigat at walang katapusang tungkulin; patnubayan Mo nawa kami sa aming pagpapakasakit at huwag mo pong itulot na kami ay manghinawa o magkulang ng pananalig, o maghangad ng pabuyang higit sa makatarungan, at sa halip ay makasumpong kami ng labis-labis na kabayaran sa aming pagpapagod sa kasiyahang nadarama namin sa aming mga gawain, at ng sa ganito ay matagpuan namin ang lubos na kahalagaan ng aming mga sarili.

Pagkatapos namin ng gawain sa maghapon, turuan Mo po kami na maghanda para sa aming gawain sa kinabukasan sapagkat iyon ay bahagi ng aming pagpapakasakit; ipag-adya mo kami sa hibo ng maluhong pamumuhay, sa paghahanap ng mga kaluwagan at pribilehiyo, gayundin naman sa paghahangad ng kapangyarihan at kalabisang sumisira sa aming pagkatao; at sa halip gawin Mo po kaming isang lahing may tibay at tatag, nagsasarili, masayahin at makatwiran.

Patnubayan mo po ang sa amin ay namumuno na kumilos at magpasiya nang buong tatag ngunit may pagpapakumbabang dala ng katalinuhan, katalinuhang batay sa katarungan, katarungang salig sa sa damdaming maka-tao, at patnubayan mo rin silang mga kumikilala sa kanilang mga tunay na karapatan at pananagutan bilang tao at bilang bahagi ng lipunan.

Pawiin Mo po sa aming mga puso ang galit, ang sama ng loob at hinanakit, ang mga sigalot ng nakaraan. alisin mo rin sa aming kalooban ang mga pag-aalinlangan at pagkaigatig sa kasalukuyan. Ang aming mga pagpapakasakit ay dalisayin Mo upang magsilang ng sambayanang siya na ring sariling lakas ngayon, at saksi ng magandang kinabukasan.

Casiguran 2009 and 2010 Audit reports uploaded.

Casiguran Online Community, is a representation of the unrepresented sentiment of the people, specially the common tao - that we are concerned as individuals (unpolitical members) and helpless at the same time as to what redress or recourse to correct the path and priorities of our leaders. Yet the start of alleviation is to recognize the source of our nation's ills - corruption starting from the grassroots. By addressing the 'recommendations' by our able field auditors nationwide, based on their recurring findings of irregularities, we will be in our path towards national transformation. Theorising that a change in pagkatao of our leaders will change radically our pagkabansa. That audits will take us to better leadership, and if there is an enabling law to make sure these recommendations are monitored, with repercussion as to how the succeeding budget will be implemented depending on the implementations of previous findings. We know, that is already beyond COA's scope, yet we are wishful thinking that all these reports will be given utmost importance to the highest extent by the government

All reports by Auditors, specially from local government units, should be uploaded immediately and soft copies available to respective regional and national offices. What if the Auditor lost his copies and not uploaded online? The only ones who have copies are the same officials who are subject of the COA Audit findings. Although reports are locally available, and in theory can be requested from local officials, there is a degree of indisposition from ordinary Juan to just personally approach the administration in question, unless as cause-oriented group, where such right to information been rather served than available upon request. In our experience, where securing copies locally in the municipal level is the last option, took four years since 2008 and we have run circle of going back to receive the copies from the Auditor. When the Auditors already emailed the reports to COA website, it should be downloadable, and email inquiries to COA webmaster should merit reply. COA Website is an excellent democratic tool of government in its drive for transparency and against corruption where every citizen has access to such information to encourage public concern and open discussion, thus more accountability of public servants. We cannot achieve openness and transparency without accessibility of Information.

Above are examples of those who devoted life to our own Casiguranin Agta's welfare, an American and a German. Ironically in the age of people power, recently with Egypt, we experience eviction and disempowerment of our people from their own land in the guise of progress, not (directly) by foreigners (who are investors) but more so intriguingly one of our own.

In the 80s, Casiguran barangays were given free fishing nets which was used communally by the barangays where catch are shared or partitioned to all the residents. It was part of barangay empowerment and basic services delivery program by the national government.

April 10, 2009. See snapshot of Bianuan church in this video when I invited Father to grace the Morey 2009 in Motyong. He was aware of our group and asked more about it and the purpose of celebrating the 400th year of Casiguran in Motyong. I mentioned the lack of priestly vocations since the Franciscans founded the mission, where he immediately cited the name of a Casiguranin priest. Reading the papers about the attack and intimidation against him brought back impressions of that meeting. He is a Casiguranin hero. Most often, heroes are natives fighting for local rights, but here is a stranger risking his life for Casiguranins who have forgotten to stand for themselves. It is very seldom that we find a hero, much more a hero fighting for us even if we have resigned or don't care.

Rizal dedicated his Noli Me Tangere to the martyred priests, Gomez, Burgos, Zamora, and by it started Filipino awakening. Ninoy's martyrdom started the end for Marcos. What motives could there be in killing or threatening a helpless priest?

Sa mga kamag-anak at kaangkan, kaibigan at kababayan, Sa mga nakiramay at ngayo'y naghahatid sa aking ama, Salamat po sa inyong mga dasal, pag-abuloy, pagtulong at pag-alalay, Salamat po! Akin po muling hinihiling ang inyong patuloy na pagdarasal. The Mission of Casiguran

We heard that some officials in Casiguran are doubting the fact that it's Casiguran's 400th founding. What could be the motive or benefit that can be derived from making Casiguran younger? "Matanda na tum bayan tam ay..." the saying goes.

The following excerpts established our founding history. Aurora.ph wrote:

In 1609 another Franciscan priest Father Blas Palomino penetrated the rugged scrubland with six other priests and managed to reduce the wild vegetation into three rancherias or settlements thereafter founding three towns namely Baler, Casiguran, and Palanan. Father Blas Palomino was martyred in Macassar (present-day Borneo) on 30 August 1622 while doing evangelization work. It must be noted that although the founding of these three towns was attributed to Father Palomino and his group, native settlements already existed and occupied by a varied group, which included the Dumagat, Aeta, Ilongot, and Tagal. Considering that the words Baler, Casiguran, and Palanan do not have any equivalents in Spanish nor do they appear to have Spanish origins, it can be deduced that these were the original names of the places and that they originated from the natives of the area. in 1856, during the term of Governor General Manuel Crespo y Cebrian, it became a separate district, with the town of Baler as capital, including the towns of San Jose de Casecnan, San Miguel de Dipaculao, and Casiguran. [tungkab]

Even before 400 years ago;

The province formerly known as Tayabas, was explored by the Spaniards in 1571 and 1572 when Juan de Salcedo visited and explored upon the order of the first Spanish Governor General of the Philippines, Miguel Lopez de Legaspi. They passed through the central portion of Tayabas in his march across Laguna Province to Paracale. The following years, Salcedo led his famous expeditions around the northern coast of Luzon. He visited the “CONTRACOSTA” towns of Casiguran, Baler and Infanta. [tungkab]

And Casiguran was part of the early ecclesiastical division;

Nueva Cáceres, or Camarines, is one of the three of the present ecclesiastical divisions of the island of Luzon. It includes all the eastern part of that island, and the adjacent islands, as we shall presently see. It extends from the sea on the west, at the mouth of the strait of Mindoro, where it is bounded by the archbishopric of Manila—as likewise in the interior, where pass its northern limits, the only boundaries that it has within the land—to the eastern sea in the extreme southeast of the province of Caraga, also the boundaries of the archbishopric. However, it has jurisdiction in the village of Baler and in that of Casiguran, in the province of Nueva Ecija; and those of Polillo and Binangoñan de Lampon, in Laguna. [tungkab]

However, reading the history authored by Ed Angara, it failed to mention Casiguran, contrary to the above references, to be as old as the capital town of Baler;

The entire coastal region of Aurora was linked ecclesiastically to the southern town of Infanta in the early years of the Spanish period. Infanta would become the biggest municipality in the main district of what was then called Kalilaya, later to become the province of Quezon. As early as 1591, the Spanish authorities had organized Kalilaya district to include large parts of what now make up the provinces of Laguna and Nueva Ecija. In 1701, Nueva Ecija was separated from Kalilaya Province and given its own local government. Around 1749, the provincial capital was in turn transferred from Kalilaya to the southern town of Tayabas. The whole province then took on the name of Tayabas as well.

Ecclesiastically, the region was turned over to the Augustinians and Recollects in 1658, when the vanguard Friars Minor began to lack missionaries to serve the growing population. But the Franciscans regained the territory in 1703, setting up missions in Dipaculao in 1719 and in Casiguran in 1753. [tungkab]

In this post, we mentioned that Aurora is not Tagalog, where Casiguran has a dialect of its own that makes it distinct and most probably as old as any tribe that has its own language like the Ilocanos, bicolanos, Bisaya, etc. Definitely, a tribe, a minority group that developed its own dialect, Kasiguranin, could not have been established only in 1753. If there was already this town Casiguran before the Spaniards came, then it follows that the first missions that would be established, which is the basis of a town's anniversary, is the Mission of Casiguran. To forget this commemoration will be unfair to the martyrs that introduced us Christianity.

The Recollect fathers Fray Benito de San José, Fray Francisco de San José, and Fray Clemente de San Nicolás having been assigned, with three other companions, to the village of Binangonan, established the first house and church, with the title of San Guillermo; and two religious remained there. Afterward they went to the village of Baler and established a convent, under the patronage of St. Nicholas of Tolentino. The third was the village of Casiguran, with the advocacy of our father St. Augustine. The fourth was established in Palanan, with the title of Santa María Magdalena. The discalced Augustinians resided for forty years in those convents founded on the coasts of the Pacific, exclusively consecrated to the service of God, and the sanctification of their neighbors, and they attained both objects with great spiritual advantages.

We had religious there of pure virtue, who were imitating the virtues of the dwellers in the desert. From those missions went forth our father Fray Bartolomé de la Santísima Trinidad, son of the convent of Madrid. He lived much retired from intercourse with men; and when he was elected provincial, in the year one thousand seven hundred and one—at which time all said that he was a person unknown in Manila—Archbishop Camacho uttered these words: “The election of the discalced Augustinians has been and is, properly, an election by God and by the Holy Spirit.” While so great advance did the missionaries on the opposite coast make in their own sanctification, not less was the gain in the vineyard entrusted to their care. They made many Aetas and heathen children of the Catholic church, and directed those souls along the paths of eternal life. They had the special glory of numbering, among those whom they directed, some privileged women endowed with the gifts of heaven, and raised by the spirit of God to a height of Christian perfection which confounds our lukewarmness in His service. One of these was Sister Juana de Jesus, a native of the village of Binangonan de Lampon, an oblate nun of our order, who elevated herself with the steps of a giant, even to the greatest and most complete purification of her spirit, by her abstraction from worldly affairs, by her heroic practice of all the virtues, by her fervent daily communion, and by the most lofty contemplation and the most clear vision that God vouchsafed her of the mysteries of our holy religion. Ito ay ketaketa ng magkababayan na magkasundung ipagdiwang ang ika-400 taon ng bayan. Ikeryaw ang diwa ng pagka-agta, ang pag-angay ay pag-agum sa tribu at diwang makabayan. Hindi para makipayes kundi angay magpasabawan atanan sa eesang damakan. Walang masanike ta wala ritung dikel o bedit na tolay. Ikuyog ang mga bakes ati lakay bilang pagsaludo at pasalamat. Gusto tam mapag-ade-adene ang mga Casiguranin maski san nepadewat, lalo na tayong dito magpagiyan bago pa tulos na maging dayuhan sa sariling bayan. It's good news to hear that Aurora has become an economic zone, and that we will have our airport ready by 2010. A congratulations is in order for those who made it into law, as if an enabling law is the only main prerequisite towards augmenting this poorest province' economy. The law will indeed create jobs - a sure benefit the constituents will get as token. It is a good law that every Agta should welcome, appreciate and celebrate.

The economic zone will cover Barangays Esteves, Divet and Dibacong in this costal town from the original proposed location in Baler.>

Had we have the power, money and foresight, it would have been best to land bank early on. In 10 years, Casiguran will be Aurora's capital.

Is Agta Casiguranin same with Casiguran Agta? The former is a means of identification to refer to a culture and the latter a minority group. (some) Casiguranins refer or call themselves affectionately and proudly 'Agta'. Casiguranin Agta aren't Casiguranins and vice versa. But Casiguranins can be Bicol Casiguranins, Ilocano Casiguranins, Agta Casiguranins, Bisaya Casiguranins. Casiguranin is the noun and the word before it is an adjective. Casiguranins are not Tagalog which has its own minority group distinctly Casiguranins, which on 1609 census were only 300 families. Baler and Casiguran districts were not previously part of Tagalog region and could be referred to as another locality.

Aurora is one of the poorest province in the country. Despite having prominent sons and daughters, and despite being founded earliest (400th year), it remains a neglected. Election did not seem to have an alleviating effect nor change in leadership. Poorest constituency vote poorest. Like Batangbaler we share Williams' remarks on politicians.

Aurora is Not Tagalog

The province was named after Aurora Quezon, born in Baler and wife of Manuel L. Quezon, the first president of the Philippine Commonwealth.

Aurora was first explored by Juan de Salcedo in 1571 when he reached Casiguran and Baler from Laguna. In 1609, a Franciscan mission was founded in Baler. In 1735, Baler was destroyed by a tidal wave from the Pacific Ocean. The surviving inhabitants decided to move to higher ground. In 1814, the village of Binondo was founded away from the coast.

Baler was a part of Nueva Ecija until 1902, when it was ceded to Tayabas (now Quezon province). During the Commonwealth period, when President Quezon unexpectedly visited Binondo, he named it Aurora in honor of his wife. [read]

Aurora was not originally part of Quezon province (Tayabas) until it was annexed in 1902. Aurora is not Tagalog. There were only two towns of Baler and Casiguran then before it was subdivided into present eight. Casiguran has its own distinct dialect. There are many Baler words that are Casiguranin as well and cannot be called Tagalog.

Suman Festival

In our enthusiasm to think of what festivals to stage, we create traditions that weren't there to begin with and pass them off as "indigenous." Many of our festivals range from the bawdy to the bizarre. One town in the country is even thinking of putting up a "suman festival." read

Philippine Politics is like a festival of sorts where trivialities are hyped to create a make-up tradition which in turn make a mockery of what culture (refinement) ought to mean. Fiestas were partially overused by the colonizers to distract the subjects (indios) from reflecting on their bondage. The true purpose of the occasion which is good is lost in the interpretation and motives of the organizers. A province has got to be "branded" with a festival of superlatives. Aurora is no exemption even in the political festival (mockery).

But if you'll judge the improvement of Aurora or Baler to the time they spent in power why are we still lagging behind? And why for crying out loud does a mojority of Balerians (note! not all) seems to be into licking their booths, where is their backbone? We cant rely on these families the advancemet of the future of Aurora, if we really want improvement the people of Aurora must be able to rely on them selves. read

The Ati-Dynasty Law is a mockery of sorts where what supposed to stop political dynasty of few families only perpetuates husband and wife or father and son turns of elective power and position. But there is a vertical political dynasty that has become a model of sorts where relatives become running mates.

In a food festival, you'll see a wide variety of the same kind which could turn to nausea. You'll see every kind of suman possible not anymore to serve appetite but fancy. It is same in Aurora politics where you have the same surname in most positions and differs only in first names. This province is almost 400 years old, yet the state of political and social consciousness' maturity haven't advanced from the conquistadores epoch. The stomach is more straightforward than brain where it vomits that which is not acceptable to itself while the latter simply consent. The complete political reversal of the dynasty and status quo will provide some hope towards advancement, assuming we'll have a clean election for the first time.
